These root word activities were designed to be stress-free, print-free, and prep-free so students can be 100% independent and get to work right away while teachers have time to take attendance and get ready for each class period.
Here’s what you’ll get:
-
Original PDF version to be displayed while students complete their work in a composition notebook. No prep and no copies.
-
Google Slides Version. Adapted instructions and slides for students to complete all work in Google Classroom.
-
Worksheet version with one root and all activities on one page so teachers can print each week or make all 36 copies at the start of the year to be hole-punched into binders.
Prep is quick and easy… Literally, just display the bell ringers, assign them in your digital classroom, or print one page per student. Students will write their daily work in a notebook, on their worksheet, or type right into their Google slides.
Your students will love knowing exactly what to do when they enter class and you’ll love that you’ll finally have time to take attendance because students will be 100% independent. They’ll easily get to work and learn important Greek and Latin Roots or common suffixes and prefixes each day.
All of these bell ringers are based on the most common Greek and Latin Roots and suffixes, and prefixes. Each day gives enough information for students to be able to review or learn as they work, so you aren’t spending that precious time trying to teach new concepts.
36 weeks of the following bell ringers are included:
-
Monday: Title their page, date their page, create a table and write root or affix and its origin.
-
Tuesday: Write example one, and its definition, use it in a sentence, and illustrate the example.
-
Wednesday: Write example two, and its definition, use it in a sentence, and illustrate the example.
-
Thursday: Write example three, and its definition, use it in a sentence, and illustrate the example.
-
Friday: Try to determine the root or affixes meaning, come up with a new word using the root or affix, use it in a sentence, and then illustrate their example.
The format of these activities are so quick that these could all be done in one day (or just 10 minutes) instead of a daily warm-up.
The Following Roots and Affixes are Included in the 36 Weeks:
Un-, Bio-, Graph-, Rupt-, Geo-, Tract-, Bi-, Tri-, Quad-, Mis-, Photo-, Meter-, Terra-, Phone-, Scope-, Anti-, Multi-, Poly-, -ology, -ject, -struct, astr-, aud-, dict-, port-, hydr-, therm-, bene-, phobia- , hom-, micro-, inter-, chronos-, vac-, in-, il-, im-, ir-, centi-

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Katelyn D. says, “We were using some different bell ringers the first quarter that were clearly not cutting it. My students were either confused or skipping them all together (so no, not engaging at all!)- Not what bell work should be about! Martina is a favorite follow of mine and when she posted about these, I trusted her and haven’t turned back! Each day brings a new quick (like intended!) bell ringer, a fun conversation starter to get us started on a great note each class period- all while knowing I’m covering skills constantly each week that I may miss otherwise!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Jessica L. says, “I love this resource! It is one of my favorite TPT purchases to date. I teach 6th grade and I have a very diverse group of students, so I wasn’t sure how to handle vocabulary instruction. But teaching roots has been a game changer! My students feel successful because this resource allows us to work together in class, and they are actively noticing roots in other words now and making sense of the word’s meaning. Great resource that made teaching roots so much easier. Thank you!.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sarah F. says, “I have used this resource for the last 5 years and I wish I could give it a million stars. It sets routine as they walk in the classroom, it builds their knowledge of roots and affixes they see ALL the time, and they take control of their own learning. Every year, I have students tell me (unprompted!!) that they are so glad we did this. Thank you!!!”
