Engaging Lessons for Middle School Grammar

Engaging Lessons for Middle School Grammar

As much as I am a stickler for grammar rules, teaching grammar can be a little monotonous. From types of sentences to identifying different types of pronouns, grammar can be a tedious concept to teach in middle school. However, engaging lessons for middle school grammar are not out of reach with resources that are readily available for your students (and no to low prep for you)! Here are some ways to get started with fun grammar lessons for your middle school readers and writers.

NoRedInk

One way to deliver engaging lessons for middle school grammar is with NoRedInk. To begin, NoRedInk is an online platform that delivers grammar and writing lessons. Since NoRedInk was created by a high school English teacher, the platform is designed with student learning and engagement in mind.

One thing I love about NoRedInk is the organization of tasks. First, you can assign targeted practice to help students master middle school grammar skills. Next, there are differentiated writing lessons for students with different genres and modes (additional available in the premium version). In addition, assessments help you target the skills your students need for reteaching and extension. Finally, there are assessment and skill practices that align with standards and state testing.

Exit Tickets

I can teach a middle school grammar lesson, think my students “get it”, and then find out the next day that they didn’t really understand all the content I shared. One way to avoid this misstep and keep the students engaged is with exit tickets.

The middle school ELA exit ticket bundle has more than 350 exit tickets for different middle school ELA concepts. The grammar exit tickets are some of my favorites to check for understanding at the end of the lesson.
