What it’s really like to be an elementary teacher in a middle school teacher’s body.

I taught kinder for two years than 5th and now 6th. I love middle school and your post is spot on!

I'm so glad you posted this. I taught 5th grade self-contained, then switched schools and went to 3rd grade consultant teaching, then up to 5th again all while I lived in VA. I knew I wanted to move back home to NY someday and teachers in my hometown area NEVER leave their positions. So the year before I left Virginia I switched schools and taught one year of English 10 & 12. (Thankfully in the same county/school district, so that made the HR side of things easy.) I freaking LOVED teaching high schoolers. I've been back to 4th-5th self-contained for 8 years now and I am happy, but I would love to go back to high school again someday. Thanks for posting this! Glad to see you are loving middle school so much.

Omg this is me right now. I am elementary certified and subbed almost a year in third grade. And have been in sixth all year and will be in eighth grade as my first official year of teaching and moving from history to science. Love this and will follow you.

Thank you so much for this amazingly honest and oh so helpful post!!! Long time 5th grade teacher here! I passionately love 5th grade but have had an itch saying "why not move up to middle school?" Your post answered and validated SO MUCH for me. Many thanks and cheers! I appreciate you!! Wendy

I am obsessed with your blog and I was so excited when I saw this post! I have taught K-1 for the last 10 years. However, I have taught numerous upper grades in the past. I will be teaching 5th & 6th grade ELA next year. Like you, I do not know all of the "grammar rules" and will definitely be learning with my students (which is definitely outside my comfort zone~ but I'm determined). I teach in a charter school and will also have 55 minutes with each class. I would love to hear how you get all the ELA standards in within your 55 min. schedule. Will you please share? Thanks so much for being an inspiration to others!

  6. Thank you for sharing. I am moving to self contained 5th grade after spending 14 years with 7th and 8th graders, and 4th and Kinder before that. I agree that change is good.

Hello, you used to write wonderful, but the last several posts have been kinda boring… I miss your tremendous writings. Past several posts are just a bit out of track! come on! seo consultant singapore
